PUKEKOHE

Defending champion Kayne Scott put in a well-timed scorcher of a lap to take pole position for the seventh and final round of this season’s Parker ENZED NZV8s Championship at Pukekohe this weekend.

Part of the PlaceMakers V8 Supercar support card, the NZV8s had a late afternoon qualifying session which saw Scott set a lap time of 1:01.386 in his Fujitsu-backed Holden. This is Scott’s fourth pole position of the season.

Just 0.312 seconds behind him, Angus Fogg would have taken second slot on the grid except for the fact that an additional engine change sees the Star Mart Ford driver required to start from the back row.

This leaves current championship leader John McIntyre lining up beside Scott on the front row. As McIntyre heads Scott by 43 points for the championship title, the tussle into the first corner for tomorrow’s 16-lap race will be keenly watched by NZV8 fans. Any errors on the part of the two normally tidy drivers could spell the end of championship hopes for either Scott or McIntyre.

Former NZV8 champions Andy Booth and Paul Pedersen take third and fourth position respectively; the top four an evenly matched Holden-Ford combination.

Darren Henderson put in his best qualifying effort in his NZV8 career, setting a time of 1:01.919, to take fifth position. Currently third on the points board, David Besnard starts in sixth; a disappointing qualifying position for the only other driver in possible contention for the championship title.

The Parker ENZED NZV8s next get on track for a 16-lap race at 2:25pm on Saturday. Sunday’s big day of action includes the last two races of this season’s Parker ENZED NZV8s Championship – a 16-lapper at 10:25am and the reverse grid 20-lapper at 4:30pm to wrap up the weekend’s action at Pukekohe.

This weekend’s event at Pukekohe may be the last time the Australian V8 Supercars race on the popular circuit, but the NZV8s, and the rest of New Zealand’s leading motor racing championships, return to Pukekohe Park Raceway for their 2007-08 season in October or November this year.
