Guy Fawkes display in New Plymouth cancelled
URGENT REPORT: New Plymouth District Council in Taranaki has said they are not having a Guy Fawkes display this year due to the lack of funding.
It was just last year when it was revealed that they would not be having a display in 2011 but would return in 2012 and now the idea of a display in New Plymouth has officially been cancelled forever.
$15,000 was needed to maintain and keep the Guy Fawkes display going this year but money is too precious to New Plymouth's council. We spoke to residents who said that they were not impressed by what had happened "The council spends $10 million on a Len Lye project but cant pay for the annual Guy Fawkes display, It was a family fave!" said a keen New Plymouth resident.
It all started to become hard on the New Plymouth Council after TSB Bank one of their major sponsors left.
After five years at the TSB Bowl of Brooklands it was to be shifted so the fireworks did not distress exotic animals at the nearby zoo.
The main option being considered was the top of Centre City.
The change of venue would have reduced the cost of the event from its usual $35,000 to $25,000.
In 2010, $11,500 in gold coin donations was collected from those who came to the event.
Dribble New Zealand investigated into this story and found out that the council had found out that the display wouldnt happen a few days ago and residents of New Plymouth were already keen for the idea.
Even posts on Facebook were made on the 4th of November saying "Cant wait for the fireworks display in New Plymouth, Does anyone know when its on?"
Another says "I hope the Guy Fawkes display in New Plymouth isnt on tonight otherwise I will miss it".
Media has been told to make this quite a big story to push it out to New Plymouth residents that there will be no Guy Fawkes display.
Some residents we spoke to, were packing for a night out tonight at the display but to be told it really isnt on. - They were gutted.
Just to confirm the New Plymouth Guy Fawkes display will not be on this year or ever again due to a lack of funding.
