As work progresses in lower High St Dannevirke, the town’s new look is coming closer with contractors Infracon Ltd now halfway through the first phase of the underground upgrade.

Although not much to look at, this important work is literally laying the foundations for the project, with an upgrade of stormwater connections and the laying of the ducting for the fibre optic network, says recently appointed contract supervisor Julian McKean.

To secure the fibre optic cable network with the bonus of enhanced telecommunications is a significant achievement and a coup for the district.

Meanwhile Mr McKean says he is impressed with the work staff associated with the project, by their enthusiasm and their “very good public relations”’. New safety barriers are also working well.

Another enthusiast for the project – despite some recent parking inconvenience – is manager of ‘Just Gifts and Souvenirs’ Helen Exeter (pictured).

“I’m thrilled to see the upgrade happening and can’t wait to see High Street smartened up,” she said from her shop across the street.

In about two weeks the first of the long awaited pavers will appear as inlays in the newly sealed footpaths soon to be constructed.

Along with the now completed street furniture designed by Dannevirke based contractors Metalform, the lower western side of High St will set the stage for the next phase of the refurbishment project.
