Manukau East Labour MP Ross Robertson has joined calls from the Tongan Methodist Church of New Zealand for an urgent rethink into road safety matters surrounding the Ormiston and Preston Road intersection following the recent deaths of two people.

“My understanding is that this part of the road was being investigated for re-alignment by the old Manukau City Council, and as a result we are now asking Mayor Len Brown and Auckland Transport to re-look into the safety of this stretch of road.

“Both deaths are tragic and could possibly have been avoided if the intersection wasn’t as messy as it currently is.

“In the meantime Auckland Transport needs to look at alternative safety measures, including increasing signage and lowering the speed limit as a matter of urgency to avoid further needless loss of life.”

Mr Robertson said he was backing the Church in its call for changes to be made after a representative, Mr Makahovalu Tonga, sought his assistance with a petition.

“I have a good relationship with all churches in my electorate, and after the most recent accident I called Reverend Vaikoloa Kilikiti to pass on my condolences. I then met with Mr Tonga and we finalised the petition.

Mr Robertson said 548 people had now signed the petition.

“They are saying enough is enough, we want action.”
