Alan Pearson is not only a great New Zealand artist, but also a great teacher, and an absolute gentleman. I met up with Alan recently in Christchurch, and he remains a complete conversationalist  who keeps you amused, always interested, and ever so willing to share his experiences. I feel extremely privileged to have discussed the visual arts with him in recent times. He is, in my view, New Zealand's foremost expressionist painter.

Alan has an exhibition at the Forester Gallery, Oamaru on now, and some drawings will be at the Suter Art Gallery in Nelson in February 2014. The NZ Portrait Gallery, Wellington is having a big show next October, mostly of drawings.

And a show of three works in Auckland at Christmas and also some new works at a show which opens in April 2014.

Awesome! If you haven't already viewed any of Alan's works, the above is a must, if you have any artistic blood flowing through your veins. You will be there for hours viewing (and interpreting) the brilliance of this man's Art.

This exhibition represents a selection of paintings and drawings made during Alan Pearson’s sojourn in southern Italy and London in the 1980s. The opera series was exhibited in New Zealand in 1986-87 after which they were placed in storage. In London Pearson ventured into the Royal Opera house, Covent Garden to draw the interior. For him to unite his two loves, painting and opera, was ideal subject matter. In England and Italy Pearson re-visited beloved painters from the Baroque and Rococo periods, those influences, combined with his natural vibrant Expressionism, inspire this series of bravura paintings
