Waitakere was formed as a special franchise club in 2004 with the express purpose of gaining a licence to play in the NZFC, New Zealand's top domestic football competition. Waitakere United represents 12 member clubs from Mt Albert to the Kaipara and is based at Waitakere Stadium in Henderson.
